Mississauga-born outfielder Dalton Pompey has hit yet another speed bump on his road to being an everyday major leaguer. The Buffalo Bisons and New Hampshire Fisher Cats have both announced that Pompey has been sent down to Double-A after struggling in Buffalo
After being anointed the Blue Jays’ Opening Day center fielder (and enabling the club to trade Anthony Gose for Devon Travis), Pompey struggled to the tune of a .193/.264/.337 slash line while not playing the best defense. He admitted to pressing but, after 23 games, Pompey was sent to the minors and called Buffalo home for about a month.
In 23 games with the Bisons, Pompey improved on some of peripheral numbers (walking in 10.8% of plate appearances and striking out in 19.6%) but he only hit .209/.294/.253, showing less power than he had at the major league level. Pompey returns to Double-A for the first time since August 18 of last year.
Other moves from today include the Bisons activating OF Caleb Gindl from the DL and transferring LHP Luis Perez back to New Hampshire. The Fisher Cats have placed RHP Cory Burns on the DL and OF Matt Newman (who also pitched last night) also goes on the DL.
In other news, the Blue Jays sent some cash to the Chicago White Sox for minor league catcher Martin Medina and assigned him to the Dunedin Blue Jays. The 25 year old catcher was drafted in the 20th round of the 2011 draft by the White Sox out of California State University Bakersfield. Generally a solid offensive catcher, Medina has a career .245/.317/.336 slash line over the past five seasons and he was hitting just .130/.245/.174 in 55 plate appearances at Double-A Birmingham before being traded. Likely a backup catcher, Medina has not thrown out more than 30% of runners at a level of High-A or above, and has never played in more than 71 games in a season.
