Minor League News: Howlin’ Like a Wolf and Two Cuts Made

Apologies in advance for typos, misspellings, poor grammar, etc. I’m banging this “news” post out before heading down to the Bobby Mattick facility.

 

 

The first bit of news is that the Blue Jays have signed veteran Randy Wolf to a minor league deal, as per several sources including MLB Trade Rumors. The deal is reported to be for $800,000 if Wolf makes the major league roster and has a June 1 opt out if he’s not on the major league team.

 

If you’ve been following the “Randy Wolf Saga,” you’ll know that Gideon Turk was the first to spot the 38-year-old left-hander throwing in the bullpen at the Blue Jays’ minor league complex last week.

 

We’ll see what Wolf can offer the Blue Jays. He last played in the big leagues last season with Miami (in limited action) but was fairly solid in three minor league organizations (Angels, Diamondbacks and Orioles). Wolf has had a long, steady career with one All-Star appearance to his credit. In his 15-year big league career, he has a 4.23 ERA and 1.34 ERA in 2293 2/3 innings.

 


 

On the home front, the Blue Jays have sent down two more players: corner infielder Matt Hague (who is now on his last option year) and right-handed reliever Ryan Tepera (who’s using his first option). Hague is a solid hitter with a bit of big league experience who was claimed on waivers from the Pirates last year. As a right-handed hitter, he’s on the outside of the competition to be Edwin Encarncion’s complement on the major league team. Tepera was just added to the 40-man roster this offseason and was very solid in Buffalo last year. Both players could be seen in Toronto this season if conditions are right although, for conditions being right, a lot will have to go wrong.
