May 4, 2017 Toronto Blue Jays Minor League Report

Raffy Lopez

With heavy rain in most of the northeast, only two games were played by the Blue Jays’ minor league affiliates. The Dunedin Blue Jays won a stellar game in walkoff fashion while a rough start by a highly-touted prospect got the Fisher Cats behind early and they weren’t able to recover.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 4, Binghamton Rumble Ponies 9

Jays prospect Sean Reid Foley had another rough outing for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (9-17) as the home side fell 9-4 to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. Reid-Foley threw 37 pitches and got just two outs, allowing four runs on three hits and three walks with one strikeout. Kender Villegas was pressed into duty with two runners on and stranded both of them, throwing 2 1/3 innings with two runs allowed, walking five batters. Dusty Isaacs also struggled with his control, hitting two batters while giving up two runs on three hits and a walk with four strikeouts. Blake McFarland allowed a run in two innings off of two hits but also struck out two and didn’t walk anyone. Tim Mayza was the only pitcher to emerge unscathed, giving up a walk and a hit with one strikeout in 1 1/3 innings.

With eight hits and eight walks, the Fisher Cats scored four times, getting a huge day from catcher Raffy Lopez. Lopez, filling in as the everyday catcher while Reese McGuire is on the DL, was 3/5 with a home run and two runs. Derrick Loveless had two hits including a double and drove in a pair of runs while also notching an outfield assist, throwing out a runner at the plate. Richard Urena was on base three times, going 1/3 with a single, two walks and an RBI.

Jordan Romano

In the only other action on Thursday night, the Dunedin Blue Jays got a late rise from their offense, scoring their first runs in the bottom of the ninth on a Juan Kelly home run to tie the game and getting a Connor Panas home run in the bottom of the 10th to notch a walk-off victory. D.J. Davis was the only Blue Jays with multiple hits as he went 2/3 but was picked off and caught stealing. Kelly hit his second home run, going 1/4 with two RBI and Panas was 1/4 with his solo blast in the 10th. Max Pentecost (1/4) and Danny Jansen (1/4, R) each had a hit.

Starter Jordan Romano was outstanding for the Blue Jays, giving up just one unearned run on four hits in six innings of work while striking out nine. Danny Young was charged with a run after giving up a hit in 1 2/3 innings and his runner came in to score on Philip Walby‘s watch. Walby went 1 1/3 innings without giving up a run of his own, allowing two hits with one strikeout. Andrew Case earned the win with a perfect top of the 10th striking out two.
