The Blue Jays’ affiliates won four of their five games on Tuesday, getting some great pitching from a Lugnuts’ pitcher and a Bisons’ pitcher.

 

Buffalo Bisons 5, Columbus Clippers 1

 

The Buffalo Bisons evened their series against the Columbus Clippers thanks to a tremendous outing for Drew Hutchison. Hutchison carried a perfect game into the sixth inning and left the game after throwing 108 pitches with one out in the eighth inning, leaving two runners on. After Pat Venditte allowed one of those runners to score, Hutchison’s line had 7 1/3 innings in the books with one run on just three hits, one walk and one hit batter while he struck out nine. Venditte didn’t allow a run of his own, finishing the eighth with two strikeouts (throwing right handed) after allowing a single and an error on a force-out attempt by Alexi Casilla.  Dustin Antolin finished the game with a clean inning, striking out one.

On the offensive side, A.J. Jimenez led the charging Herd, going 3/3 with two RBI. Junior Lake was 2/3 with a run and Casey Kotchman was 2/4 with a double and two RBI. Matt Dominguez hit his fourth home run of hte year, going 1/3 with two runs and the solo shot.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 10, Harrisburg Senators 2

 

They must grow some mighty fine lumber in New Hampshire as the Fisher Cats’ offense continued to fire on all cylinders in a 10-2 victory over the Harrisburg Senators. Rowdy Tellez led the way with a 3/4 game, hitting a double and two singles, driving in a pair and scoring three times. Melky Mesa (2/5, 2B, R, OF Asst.), Dwight Smith, Jr. (2/5, R) and Ian Parmley (2/4, 3B, BB, 2 RBI, R) each had two hits. Christian Lopes drove in two with a double and Ryan Lavarnway was on base four times with a single and three walks.

Luis Santos had a rough first inning, throwing 30 pitches and getting removed from the game after allowing two hits and two runs (with a walk) in the opening frame. Brady Dragmire got the win with three shutout inning, allowing three hits and a walk but Danny Barnes outshone him, throwing three perfect innings and striking out five. Murphy Smith finished the game with two innings of two-hit ball, striking out one.

Dunedin Blue Jays 4, Daytona Tortugas 7

 

To make up for their rained-out game on Monday, the Dunedin Blue Jays played a double header with the Daytona Tortugas, losing the first game 7-4. Conner Greene was on the mound for this one and had a rough game, allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits (including a home run) and three walks with just one strikeout and needing 80 pitches to get through 3 2/3 innings. Conor Fisk allowed a run on a solo home run in 1 1/3 innings and Colton Turner continued his unearned run streak, by not allowing a run at all in his inning.

The offense scored four times on eight hits, getting a solo home run from Derrick Loveless who also walked, drove in two runs total (with a sac fly) and scored twice. Anthony Alford was 2/3.

Dunedin Blue Jays 5, Daytona Tortugas 3

 

The Dunedin Blue Jays evened things up in the nightcap, getting excellent bullpen work and beating the Tortugas by a 5-3 score that took the normally seven-inning game into nine innings. Chris Rowley gave up three runs on 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings but didn’t walk anyone and struck out four. Alonzo Gonzalez added a scoreless frame to his resume, walking one and striking out one. Carlos Ramirez finished the sixth and pitched a scoreless seventh, giving up one hit with one strikeout. Tim Mayza rebounded from a poor outing in his last time out with two perfect innings, striking out four of the six batters he faced (including striking out the side swinging in the eighth).

It was an Emilio Guerrero two-run home run in the top of the ninth that gave the Blue Jays the win and Guerrero was 2/4 on the night. Jorge Saez also provided fireworks with his first home run in Dunedin this year. Richard Urena was 1/4 with a double and Anthony Alford was 1/4 with a run. Dickie Joe Thon walked twice and stole three bases (including home) and was caught stealing once.

Roster Notes: Michael De La Cruz was placed on the 7-day DL and Mike Reeves was brought back from extended spring training.

 

Lansing Lugnuts 4, Dayton Dragons 3

 

Despite just six hits, the Lansing Lugnuts got a tremendous pitching performance from Sean Reid-Foley and the timely hitting of Carl Wise helped snatch victory from the jaws of defeat with a rally in the ninth inning. Reid-Foley was stellar, taking a perfect game into the fifth and an ejection of the Dayton manager and second baseman must have shaken him as he gave up a single, triple and threw a wild pitch to account for the Dragons’ three runs. He returned to form, retiring the next nine batters he faced (including striking out the last two batters in the eighth inning) and finished the game with a career-high eight innings (on 100 pitches) with 10 strikeouts. He allowed three runs on only three hits and didn’t walk anyone. Dusty Isaacs pitched a perfect ninth for his 10th save, adding two strikeouts to the Lugnuts’ total.

Carl Wise was 2/4 with a home run, a double and three RBI, driving in the two final runs in the top of the ninth inning with the double. Lane Thomas and Connor Panas each walked twice and hit a single while Juan Kelly drove in a run and hit a triple.
