With just one win on Sunday, the Blue Jays’ minor league teams did not have a good day but it was mostly the bullpens that let a few games get away from some very good starting performances.
Buffalo Bisons 2, Toledo Mud Hens 5
It took 12 innings but the Toledo Mud Hens were able to defeat the Buffalo Bisons by scoring three runs in the top of the 12th and holding the Herd off the board in the bottom half. It was a Daniel Norris start day and the youngster showed some dominant stuff against the Mud Hens, striking out nine batters in six innings while allowing two runs on five hits and three walks. Greg Infante went two scoreless innings followed by Bo Schultz and Colt Hynes who each kept Toledo off the board. Chad Jenkins was the loser, allowing all three runs in his second inning of work.
The offense was fairly quiet, getting seven hits overall including a single and a double from Ryan Schimpf.
Player of the Game: Daniel Norris
New Hampshire Fisher Cats 5, Binghamton Mets 0
The Fisher Cats got another strong start, this time from Matt Boyd who lowered his season ERA to 1.02 thanks to seven shutout innings with four strikeouts and one walk. Danny Barnes relieved him for two perfect innings to drop his season ERA to 0.46. The Fisher Cats scored five times despite only eight hits, but they took six walks throughout the game. Kevin Nolan was 2/4 with a walk and an RBI while Matt Newman duplicated that line. Jack Murphy hit the team’s only extra-base hit (a double) while driving in one and taking a walk. Christian Lopes was 1/4 but drove in a pair.
Roster Notes: Dustin Antolin was activated off the DL.
Player of the Game: Matt Boyd
Dunedin Blue Jays 3, Lakeland Flying Tigers 6
Jairo Labourt was very strong for the Dunedin Blue Jays but it was the bullpen that let the game get away. Labourt threw five innings, allowing just one run on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts before Brady Dragmire allowed all four batters he faced to reach and Phil Kish gave up four hits over two innings, and let all three runners he inherited score. Chad Girodo finished the game with a clean eighth.
Roemon Fields led the hit parade with a pair of singles but he was caught stealing in his only attempt. Mitch Nay could be working his way out of a season long slump after going deep for just the second time this season, notching a 1/2 game with a walk and the home run.
Player of the Game: Jairo Labourt
Lansing Lugnuts 3, West Michigan Whitecaps 4
A day after the Lansing Lugnuts beat the West Michigan Whitecaps 4-3, the Whitecaps turned the tables, winning by the exact same score. The Whitecaps scored all four runs in the fifth inning off starter Jesus Tinoco who was very strong otherwise, pitching six innings with eight hits allowed (five in that fifth inning), no walks and six strikeouts. Dusty Isaacs finished the game off with two innings of scoreless, two-hit ball.
In his first game after being activated off the DL, Josh Almonte came back with a vengeance, going 3/4 with a double, and RBI and a stolen base. Richard Urena was 2/3 while Anthony Alford was 1/2 with an RBI, a stolen base and a sac fly.
