May 12, 2017 Toronto Blue Jays Minor League Report

The Blue Jays minor league teams had a rough day, getting just one win in four games. The Dunedin Blue Jays had the sole win while the Buffalo Bisons took a tough loss in extra innings.

 

Buffalo Bisons 4, Lehigh Valley IronPigs 5

 

The Buffalo Bisons took the Lehigh Valley IronPigs to 12 innings after scoring three in the second, and another one in the ninth to take a lead, but Lehigh Valley walked off with the victory after scoring in the bottom of the 12th for a 5-4 win. Brett Oberholtzer got the start for the Bisons and allowed one run on four hits and three walks in four innings, striking out four. Jeff Beliveau chipped away at his ERA, bringing it down to 5.19 thanks to two stellar innings, allowing one hit and striking out five. John Stilson gave up two runs (one earned) on one hit and three walks with three strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings before Matt Dermody finished the eighth for him, allowing two hits. Wil Browning tossed three innings of relief, blowing the save in the ninth by giving up the tying run but shut down the IronPigs for two more innings. Chad Girodo gave up a home run to the first batter he faced in the bottom of the 12th to allow Lehigh Valley to win the game.

Roemon Fields filled up the stat sheet by going 2/2 with two RBI and a walk, adding a sacrifice bunt. Jonathan Diaz made a rare start and was 1/3 with two walks and two runs while Jason Leblebijian was 2/6 with a run.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 1, Altoona Curve 7

 

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats (11-23) continue to struggle to score, scoring just one run despite 10 hits in a 7-1 loss to the Altoona Curve.  Ryan McBroom, Harold Ramirez and Richard Urena each had two hits with McBroom driving in the club’s only run. Anthony Alford was on base three times, going 1/1 with two walks and a stolen base.

Francisco Rios took the loss, going just four innings and giving up two runs on four hits and two walks. Alonzo Gonzalez  was charged with three runs despite two strong innings in the fifth and sixth. To open the seventh, Gonzalez walked two batters and allowed a single before Kender Villegas came in and allowed all three inherited runners to score before giving up another two runs of his own. Josh DeGraaf finished the game, tossing a scoreless inning despite giving up two hits and a walk.

Dunedin Blue Jays 4, Daytona Tortugas 0

 

The Dunedin Blue Jays got a great pitching performance from its staff, shutting out the Daytona Tortugas 4-0 in Friday night’s action. Ryan Borucki continues to extend his pitch count, needing 59 pitches to go four innings, allowing four hits and two walks but striking out five batters. Jared Carkuff got the win, pitching three scoreless frames with two hits against and two strikeouts. Ryan Cook walked one in his inning and struck out one while Andrew Case finished the game, allowing two hits but striking out one to preserve the shutout.

Max Pentecost was in the leadoff spot for the Blue Jays, going 1/3 with a double and a walk and scoring twice while Cavan Biggio, hitting behind him, was 2/3 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Juan Kelly also had two hits, going 2/4 with a double and two RBI and D.J. Davis hit his second double of the year.

Lansing Lugnuts 0, Kane County Cougars 6

 

The Kane County Cougars did something rare to the Lansing Lugnuts (19-13) on Friday night: they shut down the Sluggin’ Lugnuts for just the second time this season in a 6-0 loss. The Lugnuts had just four hits including two from Yeltsin Gudino (and one each from Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero, Jr.).

Patrick Murphy got the start and allowed five of the Cougars’ runs (though only two were earned) on five hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings with two strikeouts. Nick Hartman gave up the sixth run, finishing off the sixth and pitching the seventh while Zach Jackson had a perfect ninth, striking out one.
