The Blue Jays’ affiliates split their schedule with their opponents on Friday with a couple of bullpens wasting starting performances that kept the clubs in the game until late.

 

Buffalo Bisons 7, Syracuse Chiefs 5

 

Roberto Hernandez had one of his better starts, giving up only five hits (but two home runs) as the Buffalo Bisons went on to defeat the Syracuse Chiefs 7-5. Hernandez gave up three runs on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings but it was Chad Jenkins who vultured the win, stranding two runners inherited from Hernandez and throwing 1 2/3 innings of one-hit ball. Pat Venditte allowed two run son three hits and a walk while Dustin Antolin earned the save, stranding two of the three runners Venditte left on, walking one and striking out another.

Jesus Montero continues to hit well for the Bisons, going 2/4 with a double, a triple and four RBI and also scoring twice in the game. Matt Dominguez had two hits and two RBI while A.J. Jimenez also had two doubles, going 2/3 with a walk and a run. Dalton Pompey was on base three times, scoring twice and going 1/3 with two walks, an RBI and two stolen bases.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 4, Reading Fightin Phils 5

 

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats were nursing a 4-3 lead going into the ninth inning but the Reading Fightin Phils fought until the end, scoring two in the bottom of the ninth to walk off with the win. John Anderson provided a very solid start, going six innings and giving up three run son four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. Colt Hynes provided two shutout innings of relief, striking out two, but the normally reliable Murphy Smith gave up two home runs in the ninth inning, allowing Reading to come back to win.

Rowdy Tellez got the long-ball game going, hitting a solo blast in the first inning to go 1/3 and added a walk. Roemon Fields was on twice, going 1/4 with a double and a walk while Dwight Smith, Jr. was 1/4 with a double and an RBI.

Roster Notes: Encouraging news in the comeback of Taylor Cole came as he was sent to Dunedin to likely start his way back to New Hampshire.

 

Dunedin Blue Jays 3, Palm Beach Cardinals 0

 

Taylor Cole made his return from an impinged shoulder and threw 61 pitches, striking out three and giving up only three hits and one walk in a shutout against the Palm Beach Cardinals. Kyle Westwood was first out of the bullpen and earned his first win of the season with three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Alonzo Gonzalez went 1/3 of an inning, walking one and Carlos Ramirez finished it off with 2/3 of an inning.

The offense was mostly quiet but D.J. Davis went 2/3 with a double and a walk but was picked off of first base. Derrick Loveless was a little more successful on the bases, going 2/3 with a triple and a stolen base. But it was Dickie Joe Thon who provided all of the scoring for the Blue Jays, going 1/2 with a three-run home run and adding a walk.

Roster Notes: Taylor Cole was assigned to the Dunedin Blue Jays and Aaron Attaway was assigned to extended spring training.

 

Lansing Lugnuts 0, Bowling Green Hot Rods 5

 

The Lansing Lugnuts wasted a terrific start from Angel Perdomo as the bullpen allowed five runs over the last two innings and the Lugnuts offense couldn’t push anyone across the plate in a 5-09 loss to the Bowling Green Hot Rods. Perdomo was dominant, giving up just one hit and two walks in six innings with eight strikeouts. Josh DeGraaf took the loss, giving up two runs over two innings while Daniel Lietz allowed the runner left on by DeGraaf to score and another three runners crossed before Nate Abel could put out the fire. There must have been a lot of controversy with the strike zone because Lugnuts’ catcher Ryan Hissey was ejected by home plate umpire Brian Walsh and he was followed by manager John Schneider after Hissey was called out on strikes. Tayler Saucedo was also ejected in the ninth.

The offense only had four hits including a double from Gunnar Heidt (who also added a walk).
