Casey Lawrence

Casey Lawrence had a typical Casey Lawrence start: He limited the runs against while giving up a lot of hits but didn’t walk or strike out many. With three runs against over 6 2/3 innings, Lawrence allowed nine hits and a walk and struck out four. Throwing 102 pitches, he had 72 strikes and got nine groundball outs. Scott Barnes stranded the runner Lawrence left on. Jimmy Cordero allowed two unearned runs, just walking one and without giving up a hit while striking out two. Chad Girodo finished the game with 2/3 of an inning, striking out two batters.

The offense only had four hits with Dalton Pompey leaving the game after one at bat. K.C. Hobson drove in his 31st run of the season with a single while Matt Newman hit the only double of the game for the Fisher Cats.

Roster Notes: OF Ian Parmley was promoted to New Hampshire while Emilio Guerrero was activated off the DL and sent down to Dunedin.

Player of the Game: Casey Lawrence

Dunedin Blue Jays 5, Tampa Yankees 3

Jeff Hoffman had a solid start for the D-Jays, going five innings and allowing two runs on seven hits and just one walk. He struck out two but got six outs via the groundout while only two were on fly balls. FSL All-Star Alberto Tirado threw a scoreless inning, walking one and striking out two while Matt Dermody gave up a run on three hits in his inning of work. Brady Dragmire had a solid inning, striking out two while walking one and Wil Browning (another All-Star) earned his 12th save of the season with a perfect inning.

The offense didn’t get much done but took advantage of four Tampa errors to score five runs. They only had five hits including doubles from Dawel Lugo and Martin Medina and Roemon Fields had a single and a walk, stealing his 21st base. Mitch Nay drove in a run with a sac fly while Medina drove in a pair with his double.

Roster Note: Emilio Guerrero was activated off the DL in New Hampshire and was sent down to Dunedin. Ian Parmley moved up to New Hampshire.

Vancouver Canadians 5, Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 3

Conor Fisk
Conor Fisk

One of the Blue Jays’ newest draftees got into action for the Vancouver Canadians as Conor Fisk got the start and threw a solid four innings. Fisk threw four innings and allowed a run on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts before Daniel Lietz got into the game and walked three batters, surrendering a run in 2/3 of an inning. Joey Aquino got the win with 1 1/3 of scoreless baseball, walking one, while Michael Kraft pitched 1 2/3 innings, also walking three and allowing a run. Canadian Andrew Case earned the save, giving up a hit and a walk in 1 1/3 innings.

The Canadians probably had their originally-intended middle infield intact with 2015 sixth-round draftee J.C. Cardenas seeing his first game action alongside Lane Thomas. Cardenas was 0/4 and stole a base but Thomas drove in three runs with a double. Juan Kelly was 1/3 with a run, a walk and an RBI and Sean Hurley drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Roster Notes: J.C. Cardenas, Travis Bergen, Jackson McClelland,  were assigned to Vancouver.

Player of the Game: Lane Thomas and Conor Fisk

GCL Blue Jays 5, GCL Pirates 10

The GCL Blue Jays opened their season with some new names getting into action although the pitching didn’t really allow the batters the opportunity to pick up a win. Luis Sanchez got the start, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks over 5 1/3 innings, striking out three. Nate Abel finished the sixth and started the seventh, allowing three runs on two hits and a walk with a strikeout. Griffin Glaude gave up two runs on a hit (a home run) and a walk but struck out four batters while Kelyn Jose finished the game, giving up two runs on three hits. While there were only four walks, the wildness of some of the young pitchers was apparent as they were charged with three wild pitches and catcher Owen Spiwak was charged with three passed balls.

The offense had seven hits and Canadians accounted for three of them including Owen Spiwak’s first professional home run, by which he drove in two runs. Fellow Canadian Connor Panas was 2/4 and scored. Jesus Severino moved up from the DSL and went 1/3.

Player of the Game: Owen Spiwak and Connor Panas

DSL Blue Jays 4, DSL Orioles1 3

Yonardo Herdenez had a solid five innings in a 4-3 win over the Orioles’ first team in the DSL. Herdenez gave up two unearned runs over 5 1/3 innings with three htis and one walk allowed, striking out three. Ruben Ventura gave up another run over 2 2/3 innings with three strikeouts and Jairo Rosario pitched a scoreless ninth. The batters combined for seven htis with a double from Antony Fuentes and Manuel Herazo and a single, two walks and an RBI from Norberto Obeso.

Roster Notes: SS Jesus Severino was moved to the GCL Blue Jays.

Player of the Game: Norberto Obeso and Yonardo Herdenez
