June 22, 2017 Toronto Blue Jays Minor League Report

The Blue Jays’ minor league clubs had another rough day on the first day of the season for the Bluefield Blue Jays. The Bluefield squad lost, as did five other teams to give the organization a 1-6 record.

 

Buffalo Bisons 6, Syracuse Chiefs 7

 

Gregorio Petit

The Buffalo Bisons looked like they were going to pull out a win over the Syracuse Chiefs but, after the Bisons rallied for a run in the top of the ninth inning to take the lead, Syracuse got two in the bottom thanks to a home run by Irving Falu who capped off his 4/5 game by helping the Chiefs to a 7-6 win. Lucas Harrell had a solid start, tossing five innings of two-run, six hit ball, walking three and striking out two. Matt Dermody provided a scoreless inning but Wil Browning was hit for three runs on three hits and two walks in the seventh. Chris Smith tossed a scoreless eighth but was tagged for the home run in the ninth, taking the loss.

Rowdy Tellez finally hit another home run, going 1/3 with the home run and a sacrifice fly. Christian Lopes was 1/3 with a double, an RBI, a run and a sac fly but it was the bottom of the order that did most of the heavy lifting with Gregorio Petit, Shane Opitz and Roemon Fields all going 2/4. Petit hit two doubles, drove in a run and scored while Opitz had a double and Fields had a triple, a run, an RBI and a stolen base.

Roster Notes: Jon Berti was activated and promoted from Dunedin.

 

 

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 1, Harrisburg Senators 10

 

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats lost again to the Harrisburg Senators, 10-1 as the pitching staff was hit hard. Shane Dawson was charged with eight of the runs on 10 hits (including two home runs) and three walks with three strikeouts in just four innings. Alonzo Gonzalez allowed an unearned run on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts over three innings. Jose Fernandez threw a perfect eighth while Danny Young allowed a run on a walk and a hit in his Double-A debut.

The Fisher Cats had five hits including a pair from Harold Ramirez. Richard Urena was 1/4 with a double and an RBI.

Player of the Game: None

Roster Notes: Danny Young was promoted from Dunedin to New Hampshire.

 

 

Dunedin Blue Jays 1, Tampa Yankees 6

 

DJ Davis

The Dunedin Blue Jays were beaten 6-1 in a rain-shortened tilt against the Tampa Yankees. Jordan Romano allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits in three innings, striking out four while Tayler Saucedo, recently promoted to Dunedin, threw two scoreless innings, striking out two.

The D-Jays had three hits including triples from Lane Thomas (who also walked and scored) and D.J. Davis who drove him in. Lourdes Gurriel had the other hit, going 1/2.

Roster Notes: Tayler Saucedo was promoted from Lansing and Jon Berti was promoted back up to Buffalo. Daniel Young got the promotion to New Hampshire.

 

 

Lansing Lugnuts 4, West Michigan Whitecaps 5

 

Edward Olivares

The Lansing Lugnuts got their second half started on Thursday with a 5-4 loss in 10 innings to the West Michigan Whitecaps. The Lugnuts were in a position to win, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh but West Michigan tied the game back up in the bottom and ultimately plated the winning run in the bottom of the 10th. Edward Olivares was 2/5 with a triple, an RBI, a run and a stolen base while Mitch Nay hit a solo home run and also hit another. J.B. Woodman had a solid game, going 1/2 with two walks (and no strikeouts) while Joshua Palacios was 1/4 with a walk.

Yennsy Diaz had a solid outing, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks in five innings, striking out six. Daniel Lietz allowed two more runs in two innings and Connor Eller took the loss, giving up the walkoff run in the10th despite two scoreless innings before that.

Roster Notes: Jared Carkuff was promoted to Lansing from Vancouver and Tayler Saucedo was promoted to Dunedin. Andres Sotillo was activated off the DL.

 

Vancouver Canadians 1, Everett AquaSox 5

 

Norberto Obeso

The Vancouver Canadians lost 5-1 in afternoon action to the Everett AquaSox. Dalton Rodriguez was on the mound to start and lost the momentum that he had after his first outing in which he went five innings without an earned run. On Thursday, Rodriguez went 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on five hits (including a solo home run) and one walk with five strikeouts. Miguel Burgos allowed another run over 2 1/3 innings, giving up three hits and one walk while Brayden Bouchey, pitching for his hometown team, tossed two perfect innings, striking out a pair.

The Canadians had just four hits with some new blood in the lineup. Kacy Clemens went 0/3 with a walk playing first base. Norberto Obeso was 2/5 and Owen Spiwak was 1/4.

Bluefield Blue Jays 6, Greeneville Astros 13

 

The Bluefield Blue Jays opened their season with a 13-6 loss to the Greeneville Astros. Josh Winckowski was the Opening Day starter, giving up four runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks in four innings with two strikeouts. Jose Nova gave up six more runs on three hits and a walk over one inning while Joel Espinal finished the game, giving up three unearned runs over three innings, allowing five hits and one walk with two strikeouts.

Several 2017 draftees were in the starting lineup for the Blue Jays. Canadian Tanner Kirwer was 1/5 with a double and two RBI while first-baseman Ryan Noda went 2/4 with a double and an RBI. Brandon Polizzi was 2/3 with two runs and Ryan Gold was 1/3 with a walk, a double, an RBI and two runs. Sterling Guzman was 2/4 with an RBI and a run.

DSL Blue Jays 3, DSL Giants 2

 

The DSL Blue Jays eked out a 3-2 win on Thursday, getting a strong starting performance as they defeated the DSL Giants. Naswell Paulino tossed six innings, giving up just one run on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Luis Alvarez threw two scoreless innings while Yunior Hinojosa finished with the save despite allowing another run in the ninth.

Rafael Lantigua, Gabriel Moreno and Yhon Perez each had a pair of hits, going 2/4 with Moreno and Perez driving in a run each and Moreno scoring.
