July 27 Minor League Report/July 28 Preview

J.A. Happ
J.A. Happ

The Blue Jays managed to make it two wins in a row in Yankee Stadium thanks to solid work from J.A. Happ and timely offense. The minor league clubs seemed to need extra innings to decide matters half the time.

Buffalo Bisons 9, Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs 4

Brad Mills had an effective debut with the Buffalo Bisons, allowing five runs on seven hits over five innings. Kyle Drabek gave up another run over two innings and Ryan Tepera threw two scoreless innings to finish the game. The batters showed why Jo-Jo Reyes didn’t last long in Toronto, scoring again and again off of him. Adron Chambers (2/4, BB, 2 R), Kevin Nolan (2/5, R), Kevin Pillar (2/4, 2 R, 2 RBI, 3 SB), Brad Glenn (2/4, R, 3 RBI) and Jonathan Diaz (2/4, R, RBI) all had two-hit games and Jared Goedert drove in two with a triple.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 9, Harrisburg Senators 7

Game Suspended due to rain.

It’s been an exciting one in Harrisburg as the Fisher Cats and Senators are involved in a game that had to be suspended in the bottom of the 12th inning with the ‘Cats having just gotten out to a 9-6 lead thanks in part to a two-run home run by Cory Aldridge and Scott Gracey, on to pitch the bottom of the 12th, allowed a run to score already. Scott Copeland got the start and went five innings, giving up two runs on four hits and three walks with six strikeouts. Randy Boone, back with New Hampshire, gave up three runs in 1 2/3 innings while Gregory Infante gave up another run in 1 1/3. Mickey Storey pitched the 10th and 11th, allowing just a hit and a walk with three strikeouts. Among the 20 hits (so far) by the Fisher Cats, K.C. Hobson has three, Aldridge has two (both home runs), Derrick Chung has two, Andy Fermin has two, Jorge Flores had two before leaving the game for Aldridge and Dalton Pompey had two singles, a triple and a walk with a run and two RBI before leaving the game with a minor injury.

Dunedin Blue Jays 2, Charlotte Stone Crabs 9

Hits were coming fast and furious in Dunedin as the two clubs totaled 28 but the Blue Jays’ 11 hits were only good for two runs. Charlotte scored three runs off of Efrain Nieves (4 IP, 8 H, 3 K), two more off of Tony Davis (2 1/3 IP, 3 H, 2 K) and four off of Wil Browning (1 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 HR). Chad Girodo escaped his 1 2/3 innings unscathed. Of the Blue Jays’ 11 hits, only three weren’t singles and Kevin Patterson had the big day with three hits including a solo home run. Nick Baligod also had three hits including two doubles but he only scored once and didn’t have anyone to drive in.

Lansing Lugnuts 3, Burlington Bees 2

The day after a 14-inning game between Burlington and Lansing, the two teams decided that it wasn’t enough and went 15 innings on Sunday and this time, the Lugnuts came out on the better side of a 3-2 score. Starlyn Suriel made his first start with the Lugnuts, going five innings and allowing just one run on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Matt Dermody allowed the tying run in the ninth, but it was unearned and it was the only knock against him in four innings of three-hit, one-walk ball. Roberto Espinosa threw two scoreless and Francisco Gracesqui had a tour-de-force outing with four scoreless innings, allowing just two batters to reach and striking out four. Mitch Nay had the big day for the offense, going 3/6 with two doubles and a walk. Dawel Lugo was 2/7 with an RBI and Chaz Frank was 2/6 with a walk and a stolen base.

Vancouver Canadians 2, Spokane Indians 4

Vancouver lost a close game to Spokane, the team that narrowly beat out the Canadians for first place in the Northwest League in the first half this year. Zakery Wasilewski couldn’t find his control, walking four batters and giving up a hit in the first inning before being pulled with only one out. Mark Biggs relieved him with the bases loaded and, after allowing one inherited runner to score, shut the door on the Indians, striking out four in 2 2/3 innings. Alberto Tirado was very good, giving up one hit and one walk in two innings and Brett Barber threw one inning and Adaric Kelly threw two innings of scoreless relief to finish the game. On offense, Christian Vazquez and Chris Carlson had two-hit games while Franklin Barreto had the team’s only extra-base hit (a double). Both Barreto and Vazquez made errors.

Bluefield Blue Jays 1, Danville Braves 2

In the third extra-inning game of the day for Jays’ affiliates, the Bluefield Blue Jays fell to Danville in 12 innings. The pitching was outstanding for the Jays, getting five scoreless innings from Evan Smith (5 H, 1 BB, 1 K) while Oscar Cabrera allowed a run in 2 2/3 innings. Dusty Isaacs went 2 1/3 innings, allowing only one base runner and it was Conor Fisk who eventually gave up the winning run. He struggled through two innings allowing four hits and three walks. The offense was quiet but Josh Almonte pushed his batting average to .326 with a 3/5 game with two stolen bases (and was picked off).

  1. What is the status of Jake Anderson with Bluefield – is he on DL list or benched

    1. I was wondering recently about Jake Anderson too. He’s listed as active but he’s only played three games all season.
