July 25 Minor League Report/July 26 Preview

Andy LaRoche

Mark Buehrle wasn’t sharp but the bullpen was good for the Blue Jays in a loss yesterday to the New York Yankees (in the Bronx, of course). The good news was that Jose Bautista is finding his batting stroke, going deep with two home runs.

Buffalo Bisons 9, Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs 7

The Bisons held on for a victory against the Iron Pigs, thanks to Andy LaRoche and a five-RBI game that included a double and a home run. Kevin Pillar was 3/5 with two doubles and Brad Glenn was 1/4 with a home run and two RBI. Kevin Nolan and A.J. Jimenez also had two hits apiece. P.J. Walters was on the mound and he was alright, allowing four runs (two earned) over five innings but Randy Boone made his first outing in Triple-A (on this promotion), giving up just a walk over his inning.

Player of the Game: Andy LaRoche

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 5, Harrisburg Senators 3

It was the Casey Lawrence show for the Fisher Cats as he went eight innings, allowing two unearned runs on four hits and a walk. K.C. Hobson had one of his best games in New Hampshire, going 3/4 with a double and an RBI and Jon Berti drove in a pair, going 1/4. Dalton Pompey continues to hit well, going 1/3 with a triple and a walk.

Dunedin Blue Jays 2, Charlotte Stone Crabs 1

In a reversal of Thursday night’s score, the Dunedin Blue Jays got a great outing from Ben White and solo home runs from Emilio Guerrero and Gustavo Pierre to beat Charlotte. White went seven innings and allowed only one run on a solo shot (among seven hits) with just one walk and six strikeouts. The Blue Jays only had three hits but the homers by Pierre and Guerrero were enough offense to give them the win on this night.

Lansing Lugnuts 0, Peoria Chiefs 1

The bats went silent but Brad Allen was outstanding for the Lugnuts in a close loss to Peoria. Allen threw five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. The club only had one hit, coming from D.J. Davis.

Vancouver Canadians 3, Hillsboro Hops 6

According to Charlie Caskey, Alex Anthopoulos was in Vancouver to check out the Canadians and they didn’t really perform, taking a 6-3 loss. Jairo Labourt started and wasn’t able to bring his A-game in front of the VIP audience, throwing four innings but allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and five walks with four strikeouts. Daniel Lietz also allowed some runs (two) in his three innings. Michael Kraft was the best pitcher of the night, giving up just a hit and a walk in two innings. Ryan McBroom drove in a run and was 2/4 while Boomer Collins and Seth Conner each had a double (Conner took two walks). Roemon Fields stole two bases, giving him 30 on the year so far.

Player of the Game: Ryan McBroom

Bluefield Blue Jays 3, Danville Braves 4

Rowdy Tellez is starting to show signs of coming out of his early season funk as he went 3/5 with an RBI and a stolen base for the Blue Jays. Dan Jansen went 2/4 and Richard Urena was also 2/4 (with a walk and a stolen base) but it wasn’t enough offense for the Blue Jays. Francisco Rios was hit hard, giving up three runs over three innings on six hits and a walk. Matt Smoral continues to show signs of finding himself, allowing one run over four innings with five strikeouts. The best sign is the fact that Smoral only walked one batter and has only walked five batters over his last 16 innings. Markham, Ontario’s Jordan Romano finished the game with two one-hit innings in which he struck out four.

GCL Blue Jays 3, GCL Pirates 1

Nick Wells, the 6-foot-5 lefty from Alexandria, Virginia had a much better outing than his last time out, throwing five innings and giving up just one run on two hits and no walks. Conner Greene continues to dominate the GCL, throwing another five innings (in the 11 innings game). He didn’t allow a run on three hits and one walk and struck out seven batters to earn the win. Andres De Aza had two of the team’s six hits and added a walk and an RBI while Juan Kelly drove in another run.

Player of the Game: Conner Greene and Nick Wells

DSL Blue Jays 3, DSL Pirates 7

Osman Gutierrez was pretty good for the Blue Jays, throwing 3 2/3 innings and allowing just one unearned run and he struck out five batters. Edward Olivares was 2/4 with a double, a stolen base and two runs scored while Enmanuel Moreta and Brian Lizardo each went 2/4 with a double and RBI.
