Blue Jays Send 3 Back to Minor League Camp

Three players had their time in big league spring training end on Thursday when the Jays sent Dwight Smith, Jr., Andrew Albers and Mitch Nay back to the Minor League camp.

 

 

 

Albers, Smith and Nay join catcher Derrick Chung and pitcher Jayson Aquino who have already been sent back earlier in the week.

 

Albers didn’t allow a run in 2 2/3 innings (over three appearances), allowing three hits and one walk with two strikeouts. I think the plan here is to get Albers stretched out to start because he’ll be looked to as a key member of the Buffalo rotation.

 

Smith had a very good showing, going 3/7 with a double and didn’t strike out against pretty good competition. He’ll likely start 2015 in New Hampshire but he looks very mature at the plate. Word is that he’s going to get playing time at second base and I’m looking forward to seeing him at the keystone position when I’m down in Florida next week.

 

Mitch Nay hit that big home run in the intrasquad game but otherwise had a couple of hits in eight at bats. In the one plate appearance I saw on TV, he looked confused at the plate, like he had no idea of what he was looking for and trying to do. Obviously, that’s not a good thing and heading back to minor league camp will get him the reps to be able to be more confident and aggressive at the plate.

 

Chung, who was probably in big league camp to have an extra catcher around when there are lots of pitchers getting their work in, was sent back without appearing in any games. By my estimate, he’s slated for a New Hampshire assignment after finishing 2014 with the Fisher Cats.

 

Jayson Aquino had an infinite ERA in his one appearances after allowing both of the batters he faced to get on base via hits and they subsequently scored (after he was out of the game). He needs to get more work in and, since he’s the only on the 40-man roster who’s been sent back to the minor league camp, was optioned to Double-A New Hampshire.
