Blue Jays’ Round 21-25 MLB Draft Review

2014-Draft1

Yes, I’ve gotten behind on letting you know a little bit about our 2014 draftees but here’s the latest installment on the draft report!

Round 21

The Jays look like they’re not going to be too successful signing their high school catchers outside of Matt Morgan (selected in the fourth round). Reports are that 16th rounder Michael Papierski isn’t going to sign and neither will 21st rounder Drew Lugbauer. A 6-foot-3 catcher from Arlington High School in LaGrangeville, NY, Lugbauer plans to go to the University of Michigan.

Round 22

In the 22nd round, the Jays selected Bahamanian center fielder Todd Isaacs who was attending American Heritage School in Florida. Isaacs was ranked the 378th draft prospect by Baseball America and for the Jays to be able to get him in the 22nd round is a fairly big coup. He hasn’t signed yet but is expected to. He’s got sprinter’s speed and could be a speed-first defensive center fielder who has a strong arm.

Round 23

In the 23rd round, the Jays selected another Canadian in the form of Zachery Pop. A pitcher for the Canadian Junior National Team, Pop is a graduate of the Toronto Mets and the Ontario Blue Jays but is unlikely to sign with the Blue Jays, instead opting to head to the University of Kentucky next year.

Round 24

In the 24th round, the Jays selected Conor Fisk, a pitcher from the University of Southern Mississippi. Fisk is a 22 year old right hander who had a very good career in college. In 2014, he went 7-2 with a 2.62 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 84 strikeouts in 89 1/3 innings. He’s signed already and has made two appearances with Rookie-League Bluefield.

Round 25

The 25th round pick is Rob Winemiller, a 21-year-old righty from Case Western Reserve University. Winemiller hasn’t signed yet but, coming from a Division III school and being a reliever, I don’t really expect much of a problem with getting Winemiller under contract unless there’s an injury issue.
