August 29 Minor League Report

The cumulative record for the Jays’ affiliates was 3-4 on Saturday with the Bisons, D-Jays and Lugnuts winning. On Sunday the GCL Blue Jays have their playoff opener (and possibly closer) against the GCL Tigers.

Buffalo Bisons 3, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 1

 

The Buffalo Bisons got a gem from Jeff Francis who contributed to a one-hour and forty-nine minute game, throwing eight innings of one-run, two-hit ball, striking out six. Ryan Tepera earned his third save with a scoreless ninth. The Bisons got home runs from Matt Hague (his 11th) and Dalton Pompey (his first with the Bisons) while Andy Burns had two hits.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 3, Binghamton Mets 6

With their best hitter, Ryan Schimpf promoted to Buffalo, Melky Mesa picked up the slack with a two-run home run but it wasn’t good enough as the Fisher Cats fell to the Binghamton Mets. Dwight Smith, Jr. had two doubles and an RBI to account for two of the Fisher Cats’ seven hits.

Conner Greene only lasted three innings, needing 75 pitches and giving up four runs on eight hits and two walks. Dustin Antolin allowed a run over three innings and struck out five while Cory Burns gave up a run in two innings.

Roster Notes: Ryan Schimpf was promoted to Buffalo.

Dunedin Blue Jays 6, Lakeland Flying Tigers 5

Facing their old teammate Jairo Labourt, the Dunedin Blue Jays got to him for five runs and ended up with a 6-5 win over the Lakeland Flying Tigers despite striking out nine times against Labourt. Christian Lopes continues to swing a hot bat and went 3/4 with a double and two runs while Matt Dean was 2/4 and drove in four runs.

Alonzo Gonzalez got the start and allowed four runs on seven hits but only one walk in 4 2/3 innings, striking out six. Matt Dermody picked up the win with two innings of one-run ball. Brad Allen allowed just one hit in 1 1/3 innings while Wil Browning pitched a perfect ninth with two strikeouts for the save.

Lansing Lugnuts 7, West Michigan Whitecaps 6

Clinging to a one-run lead for dear life, the Lansing Lugnuts held on to beat the West Michigan Whitecaps and win their 70th game of the season. Jon Wandling allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks over 5 2/3 innings while Dusty Isaacs allowed another three runs in 1 1/3 innings. Phil Kish earned his seventh save with two scoreless innings, giving up three hits and striking out two.

Michael De La Cruz had a career game, going 4/5 with a double while Richard Urena was 3/5 wtih two doubles, a stolen base (and was caught stealing) and scored a run. Alex Maldonado drove in two runs, going 1/3 with two walks while Christian Vazquez (2/5, RBI) and D.J. Davis (2/4, BB, 2 R) had two hits each.

Vancouver Canadians 2, Spokane Indians 3

 

It took 12 innings but the Spokane Indians walked off with a victory over the Vancouver Canadians. Angel Perdomo started and allowed two runs on four hits and five walks over five innings bu the bullpen was excellent for six innings, getting two scoreless from Daniel Young while Canadian Sean Ratcliffe continues to enjoy an excellent August, throwing another four scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and striking out four. Bob Wheatley took the loss, giving up a run on two hits in the bottom of the 12th.

Ryan Hissey was 2/3 with a triple and a walk, scoring a run while Ryan Metzler was 2/5. The Cs were 0/4 stealing bases on the game.

Bluefield Blue Jays 3, Danville Braves 10

 

The Bluefield Blue Jays continue to play out the string as they lost yet again, 10-3 to the Danville Braves. D.J. McKnight went yard, going 1/4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs while Deiferson Barreto was 2/4 with a double and an RBI, edging closer to the .300 mark (.296) on the season. Luis Sanchez started and allowed six runs (four earned) over five innings, striking out five while John Kravetz gave up a run in two innings and Joe Claver allowed three runs in the last inning.

Player of the Game: D.J. McKnight

 

GCL Blue Jays 0, GCL Phillies 5

 

The GCL Blue Jays were shut out in their final game of the regular season, despite getting eight hits as a club. Nash Knight had three hits including a double while Cliff Brantley had two of his own. Juan Nunez got the start, going three innings and allowing two runs on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts and Gustavo Pierre made his first appearance as a pitcher, throwing a scoreless inning and getting one ground out and two fly outs. Hunter Barnett threw a perfect frame while Kelyn Jose allowed two walks but struck out three in two innings. Gunner Eastman allowed the final three runs in the eighth inning and Nate Abel gave up just a hit in the final inning of the game.
