August 16, 2017 Toronto Blue Jays Minor League Report

The Blue Jays’ organization was 5-2 on Wednesday, getting walk-off wins for each of their top three affiliates in Buffalo, New Hampshire and Dunedin.

 

Buffalo Bisons 5, Indianapolis Indians 4

 

Michael Saunders

The Buffalo Bisons built a 4-0 lead over the Indianapolis Indians only to see that lead evaporate with the Indians tying up the game in the ninth inning. Fortunately, Teoscar Hernandez walked it off, driving in Jon Berti with a game-winning single in the bottom of the 10th for a 5-4 win. Hernandez was 3/5 with a double, a run and a stolen base and Danny Jansen was 2/4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run. Shane Opitz had a pair of singles and Michael Saunders was 3/5 with an RBI and a run. Rowdy Tellez led off the tenth inning with his second his (his first was a double) before being pinch-run for by Jon Berti and Tellez had driven in a run earlier in the game.

Brett Oberholtzer had another solid outing, going 7 2/3 innings and giving up two runs on seven hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Chris Smith blew the save, giving up two runs in 1 1/3 innings and Murphy Smith got the win, with a perfect 10th.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 6, Hartford Yard Goats 5

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats were playing catch up after the fifth inning but they managed to indeed catch up to the Hartford Yard Goats, scoring one in the eighth and two runs in the ninth to walk off with a 6-5 win on an Richard Urena strikeout/wild pitch that allowed Andrew Guillotte to score. Gunnar Heidt had tied up the game in the bottom of the ninth with his 12th home run of the year and he was 2/4. Anthony Alford was 1/2 with a walk, two RBI, a run and a stolen base while Jonathan Davis was 2/4 with a double and a run. Reese McGuire hit his second home run in as many days, going deep with a solo shot in the fourth inning. Andrew Guillotte, was 1/4 with two runs and an outfield assist. Lourdes Gurriel and Harold Ramirez each had a hit and a walk.

Jon Harris was on the mound to start and allowed all five Hartford runs on eight hits and two walks with four strikeouts in five innings. Justin Shafer threw two scoreless innings and Jose Fernandez and Dusty Isaacs each tossed a scoreless innings with Isaacs walking one and striking out two in the ninth, earning the win.

Dunedin Blue Jays 3, Palm Beach Cardinals 2

The Dunedin Blue Jays were yet another Blue Jays team to win in a walk off, getting an RBI double from D.J. Davis to drive in Edward Olivares in the bottom of the 11th for a 3-2 win over the Palm Beach Cardinals. Davis was 1/4 and Olivares was 1/5. Cavan Biggio hit his 10th home run of the year in the first inning, driving in two and Vladimir Guerrero continues to be a walk machine, going 1/3 with two free passes.

Connor Fisk had an excellent outing, going seven innings and giving up one run on five hits and no walks with five strikeouts. Alonzo Gonzalez got a blown save for giving up a solo home run as the only blemish to his record in two innings of relief. Kirby Snead threw a perfect 10th and Daniel Lietz got the win with a scoreless 11th, walking two.

Roster Notes: Conor Fisk was activated off the temporarily inactive list and Ryan Cook was placed on the 7-day DL.

 

Lansing Lugnuts 6, Great Lakes Loons 10

 

Rodrigo Orozco

The Lansing Lugnuts lost again to the Great Lakes Loons despite getting two home runs in a 10-6 loss. Nash Knight was 1/4 with a three-run home run and Joshua Palacios was 1/5 with a two-run shot, two runs and a stolen base. Ridge Smith was 1/2 and walked twice while Mattingly Romanin was 1/3 with a double. Rodrigo Orozco also walked twice, going 1/3 with an RBI, two runs, a stolen base and an outfield assist.

Yennsy Diaz was on the mound to start, allowing five runs on four hits and four walks in just two innings. Andrew Deramo contributed three scoreless innings, allowing three hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Nick Hartman gave up three runs (two earned) on two hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings and Jared Carkuff gave up two more runs, both unearned, on two hits in 1 1/3 innings.

Vancouver Canadians 6, Spokane Indians 2

 

The Vancouver Canadians kept their streak going, making it five wins in a row with a 6-2 victory over the Spokane Indians. Reggie Pruitt had a huge game, going 4/5 with a home run and two runs, adding two stolen bases in three attempts. Samad Taylor was 3/5 with a double and an RBI while Logan Warmoth was 2/5 with two RBI, a run and a stolen base. Brock Lundquist was 2/4 and Riley Adams was 1/4 with a walk, an RBI and a run and Norberto Obeso was 1/4 with a walk, two runs and a stolen base.

Zach Logue started for Vancouver, going three innings with one run against on three hits and a walk with one strikeout. Justin Dillon got the win, going two innings, giving up a run on one hit with two strikeouts. Grayson Huffman tossed three perfect innings, striking out two and Orlando Pascual allowed just a hit in the ninth, striking out two to finish the game.

Bluefield Blue Jays

GCL Blue Jays 4, GCL Phillies 5

 

The GCL Blue Jays gave up five runs in the first two innings and couldn’t quite catch up in a 5-4 loss to the GCL Phillies. Felipe Castaneda was the starter and he gave up all five runs on eight hits (including a home run) and two walks with three strikeouts over five innings. Emmanuel Reyes went two innings, giving up two hits and striking out one and Bobby Eveld finished the game, giving up a hit and striking out two in the ninth inning.

Hagen Danner was 2/4 with a double, an RBI and a run while Davis Schneider was 1/2 with a double, two walks and a run. Patrick Morris was 1/2 with a double and a walk but came out of the game for Joseph Reyes. D.J. Neal was 1/4 with a double and two RBI.

DSL Blue Jays 9, DSL Reds 5

 

The DSL Blue Jays pushed their record to 20 games over .500 with a 9-5 win over the DSL Reds. Elixon Caballero started and tossed three innings of three run ball but only one run was earned as he allowed four hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Jhon Victorino got the win, giving up two more runs on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings. Ronald Magdaniel got the save, allowing just one hit over 2 1/3 innings.

Four players had two hits for the Blue Jays including Rafael Lantigua (2/5, 2B, RB, R), Steward Berroa (2/5, HR, 2 RBI, SB), Andres Martinez (2/4, 2B, RBI, 2 R) and Leonicio Ventura (2/4, R). For Berroa, it was his first home run of the year (and the first home run for the DSL Blue Jays by anyone not named Victor Figuereo) as well as his 20th stolen base.
