August 11 Minor League Report

Lots of baseball was played in the Blue Jays’ system on Tuesday with a complete schedule in addition to the three double headers that were played.

Buffalo Bisons 0, Rochester Red Wings 7

 

Game 1 of the double header wasn’t pretty as the Bisons were completely outplayed by the Rochester Red Wings. Todd Redmond got the start and allowed three runs on four hits and three walks over five innings while Greg Burke gave up another four runs in his two innings of work despite three strikeouts. The offense only generated three hits including a double from MVP candidate Matt Hague.

Roster Notes: C Sean Ochinko was placed on the DL with Josh Thole getting activated.

Buffalo Bisons 9, Rochester Red Wings 0

 

Johnny Wholestaff pitched a shutout in game 2 of the double header with Chad Jenkins getting the start and throwing three shutout innings, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out a pair. Ryan Tepera went two innings without allowing a hit and striking out two before Colt Hynes and Ben Rowen each threw an inning of scoreless relief, completing the whitewash.

Ty Kelly  had the big blow, hitting a grand slam in the third inning and finished with two hits and four RBI. Also getting two hits were Andy Burns (2/3, RBI, R, SF), Ezequiel Carrera (2/4, 2B, R) and Josh Thole, coming off the DL and going 2/3 with a double.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 3, Akron Aeros 10

 

The Akron Aeros found a lot to like in the New Hampshire Fisher Cats’ pitching staff on Tuesday, slamming them for 15 hits and 10 runs while the Fisher Cats didn’t help matters, committing three errors in the field. Austin Bibens-Dirkx gave up five runs in his five innings, serving up two home runs among his nine hits while he struck out six and walked two. Dustin Antolin gave up two runs (one earned) on a hit and two walks with a strikeout and Danny Barnes allowed three runs on three hits in his inning. Chad Girodo continues to be a stellar reliever, going two innings and giving up just two hits with three strikeouts.

On offense, Dwight Smith, Jr. broke out of a slump with a 2/4 game, hitting a three-run home run. K.C. Hobson hit a double and walked while Jorge Flores also was on twice with a single and walk.

Dunedin Blue Jays 0, Daytona Tortugas 8

 

Tuesday wasn’t a great day for the Dunedin Blue Jays as their five-game winning streak came to an end. Conor Fisk made his Dunedin debut, allowing six runs on five hits and three walks in five innings. Griffin Murphy returned to the Dunedin Blue Jays after spending all year on the DL, throwing two perfect innings, striking out one. Brady Dragmire allowed two runs (one earned) in two innings but struck out four and didn’t walk anyone. The offense only had three hits including a triple from Jason Leblebijian. Derrick Loveless was on twice with a single and a walk.

Lansing Lugnuts 6, Clinton LumberKings 4

The Lugnuts returned to action after an off day with a 6-4 victory over the Clinton LumberKings. Clinton Hollon had his second start for the Lugnuts and preserved his 0.00 ERA with 4 2/3 innings of five-hit, one unearned run ball, walking two and striking out two. Mark Biggs went 2 1/3 innings, allowing a run on four hits with three strikeouts while Phil Kish got tagged for two unearned runs after an error allowed them to score. Kish’s final line was 1 2/3 innings with two unearned runs on two hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Carlos Ramirez allowed a hit but managed to nail down the game with a one-out save.

Juan Kelly led the offense for the Lugnuts, going 3/5 with two doubles, an RBI and a run. Chris Carlson had two hits and a walk with an RBI and a run. Richard Urena drove in a run with a double but also made three errors on the game. Lane Thomas was 0/4 with a walk and an RBI in his Lansing debut.

Roster Notes: Phil Kish was activated off the DL.

Vancouver Canadians 7, Everett Aquasox 6

 

For the fans at The Nat, it must have been an exciting game as the Vancouver Canadians got behind in the first inning but rallied and chipped away, eventually coming away with a walkoff victory over the Everett Aquasox in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a Sean Hurley double that scored Ryan Hissey from first base. The Cs had 10 hits including three from Hurley who also took a walk, stole a base and drove in two. Canadian Connor Panas drove in a pair of runs with a double and J.C. Cardenas was 2/2 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Hissey was 1/2 with two walks and a hit by pitch, scoring twice and Andrew Guillotte also scored twice thanks to a single and a walk, adding a stolen base.

Michael Kraft got the start and surrendered the four first-inning runs and only made it through one out in the second inning before Daniel Young entered the game, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over 2 1/3 innings. Ryan Cook also allowed a run in two innings, giving up two hits and two walks. Turner Lee earned the win thanks to 3 1/3 innings that were only marred by a hit batter.

Bluefield Blue Jays 0, Pulaski Yankees 7

 

In the first game of their double header, the Bluefield Blue Jays had no answer to the Pulaski Yankees’ pitching, getting just one hit, from D.J. McKnight. Juliandry Higuera took the bullet for the pitching staff, going all six innings and giving up seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits and two walks but striking out seven.

Bluefield Blue Jays 2, Pulaski Yankees 9

 

The Pulaski Yankees punished the Bluefield Blue Jays in the second game of the double header, scoring nine runs and allowing just four hits. Jacob Anderson had a big game, going 2/3 with a double and an RBI but he was mostly it for the offense. Miguel Burgos allowed three runs in two innings and Matt Smoral walked all four batters he faced in the third inning and all four came around to score as Jackson Lowery allowed all three of his inherited runners to return to the plate. Lowery was charged with two runs of his own over four innings.

GCL Blue Jays 4, GCL Pirates 3

 

Opening their second consecutive double header, the Blue Jays picked up three runs in the sixth to come out on top of game 1. Scott Silverstein, in a rehab outing, allowed a two-run home run over two innings of work, striking out three. Justin Maese picked up his third win of the season, going five innings and giving up just one run on three hits and one walk with two strikeouts. The offense had just four hits including a two-run double from Levi Scott while Nash Knight was 1/3 with an RBI.

GCL Blue Jays 3, GCL Pirates 1

 

The Blue Jays finished the day with a second victory after the Blue Jays won their second consecutive game after being out-hit by the Pirates. Two of the Blue Jays’ four hits came in the form of home runs as Cliff Brantley and Jake Thomas hit solo shots. Edward Olivares was 1/3 with a double. Hansel Rodriguez had a great outing, giving up just one run on five hits and a walk over four innings with five strikeouts. Nate Abel followed, earning the victory with three shutout innings, giving up three hits and striking out one.

DSL Blue Jays 10, DSL Reds 6

 

For their 39th win of the season, the DSL Blue Jays got five runs in the seventh inning to overtake the DSL Reds for a 10-6 win. Sam Buelens was key, going 1/2 with a stolen base, two RBI and a run while Yorman Rodriguez led the club with three hits, three RBI and two runs. Sterling Guzman and Norberto Obeso were both 2/3 while Francisco Rodriguez scored three times, going 0/2 with two walks.

Juan Meza was hit hard, giving up five runs (four earned, and making the error himself) on eight hits (including a home run) and two walks with six strikeouts over five innings. Guillermo De La Cruz allowed one run and picked up the win with four innings of relief.
