April 24, 2017 Toronto Blue Jays Minor League Report

Edward Olivares

The Blue Jays’ minor leaguers had just two games on the books on Monday with the Bisons and the Dunedin Blue Jays off. The Lugnuts’ offensive machine continued to roll, led by a rare feat: a cycle, and a highly touted Blue Jays prospect had his best start of the year, only to be facing a highly touted Yankees prospect in a loss.

Buffalo Bisons

Scheduled Off Day

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 1, Trenton Thunder 2

Conner Greene

Conner Greene had his best start of the year for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (7-10) but the bats were quiet against the Trenton Thunder and one of the Yankees top pitching prospects, Chance Adams, in a 2-1 loss. Greene needed just 88 pitches to get through seven innings on Monday. He only really had trouble in the second inning, giving up two singles and a double resulting in two runs. Otherwise, Greene scattered just three other hits and one walk (although he did have two wild pitches, neither resulted in a run) while striking out four and getting nine groundouts and just two fly outs. Chris Rowley relieved him and didn’t give up a hit, walking one and striking out two in his inning of relief and Tim Mayza faced the minimum in the ninth, striking out one.

Tim Lopes had two of the Fisher Cats’ six hits, going 2/5 with a double and the club’s only RBI while Ryan McBroom and Harold Ramirez each went 1/4 with a double. Gunnar Heidt was on base twice with a single, a walk and a run.

The Sluggin’ Lugs scored more than 10 runs in a game for the third consecutive time, beating up on the South Bend Cubs while Edward Olivares made Lugnuts history by hitting for the cycle. Olivares had been off to a slow start, hitting .172 for the season up until Sunday, but on Monday, Olivares broke out, raising his batting average 45 points and hitting a double, a single, a home run and a triple to complete the cycle in his final plate appearance in the bottom of the eighth. Overall, Olivares was 4/5 with four RBI and two runs scored. Bradley Jones added another three hits to his season, raising his batting average to .391 with a 3/4 game in which he fell just a home run short of the cycle. Jones added a walk, drove in a run and scored twice. J.B. Woodman had two hits, going 2/4 with a double and a his second home run of the year, taking a walk and scoring twice and Yeltsin Gudino was 2/5. Bo Bichette walked twice, was 1/3 with a run and a stolen base and Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. was 1/5 with a double but three strikeouts. Jake Thomas continued to get on base at an insane rate, raising his OBP to .500 thanks to a double and a pair of walks. Ryan Hissey drove in three runs, going 1/3 with a run and two sacrifice flies.

On the pitching side, Patrick Murphy struggled in his first outing since returning from the DL, hitting his pitching limit (tossing 91 pitches) in just 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on nine hits and three walks with five strikeouts. Philip Walby tossed a scoreless 1 1/3 innings to get the win but he also allowed the runner he inherited from Murphy to score. Nick Hartman allowed a run on a hit and two walks while Jackson McClelland threw two perfect innings with two strikeouts to finish the game and pick up his second save.
