April 18 Minor League Report

It was a big day for the Jays farm teams gaining two wins and a very close loss.  While the Lugnuts were rained out yet again, the Dunedin Blue Jays got up to a epic pitchers duel, and the Buffalo Bisons were involved in a historic offensive day.

Buffalo Bisons (8-4)

The Buffalo Bisons must have eaten their spinach Thursday morning as they set all kinds of records beating Syracuse Chiefs 27-9.  That is not a misprint.  27 to 9.  I’ll direct you HERE for a rundown of some of the records that the Bisons achieved, but let’s just say that when Ryan Goins (1/7 with a double and an RBI) and Anthony Gose (2/7 scoring twice, hitting a double, driving in a run and striking out three times) had the worst days on the club, that’s saying something.  It was a special day for Jim Negrych.  He hit for the cycle.  Moises Sierra had 6 hits, just missing a cycle of his own by a home run.  Josh Thole had four singles and four RBIs.  Ryan Langerhans had two home runs and drove in six.  Luis Jimenez had five hits and eight RBI.

Just don’t ask about the pitching.  Edgar Gonazles wasn’t good in the starting role.  Only Alex Hinshaw got through unscathed.  Too bad we couldn’t put some of those runs in the bank for another game.  Or send them across the border to the offensively challenged Blue Jays, despite whatever we’d lose through service charges or exchange rates.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats (7-8)

The Fisher Cats lost a squeaker to the Binghamton Mets 4-3 on Thursday night with Ricardo Nanita hitting his first home run of the year.  Nanita, who had not been feeling well for the past few days, finally got on track with a three for four night while shortstop Amadeo Zazueta had two more hits and an RBI.  Ryan Tepera had a decent start going 5 1/3 innings, scattering eight hits and two walks, getting charged with the first three runs, while Chorye Spoone, just activated off the disabled-list, threw 2 2/3 innings, only giving up three hits, but gave up the fourth run to take the loss.  Joel Carreno came on to work a clean 9th, striking out one.

Roster Note:  The Fisher Cats put P Clint Everts on the 7-day DL and activated P Chorye Spoone.

 Dunedin Blue Jays (10-4)

The Dunedin Blue Jays found themselves locked in an epic pitcher’s duel with the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Thursday night, but emerged the winner after scoring the lone run in the top of the thirteenth inning.  Andy Burns was at it again, driving home Peter Mooney, who had been hit by a pitch, with a triple.  Despite Burns’s heroics, the real story was the pitching, especially Casey Lawrence’s 9 2/3 innings of four-hit shutout ball.  He made it easy on the bullpen, who only had to pick up 3 1/3 innings of work.

Roster Note: The D-Jays placed OF Jonathan Jones on the 7-day DL, and must have activated 1B K.C. Hobson off the DL.  While he is still listed on the team website as being on the DL, and there is no log of a roster move pertaining to him just yet, he definitely played tonight.  Hobson’s bat could be a catalyst for this light-hitting squad, as he was one of the offensive leaders of last year’s Lansing Lugnuts.
