April 14, 2017 Toronto Blue Jays Minor League Report

The Blue Jays’ affiliates went 3-1 on Good Friday, getting wins from the Bisons, Fisher Cats and Dunedin Blue Jays.

 

Buffalo Bisons 2, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 1

 

The Buffalo Bisons got a strong pitching performance from Mat Latos and beat the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 2-1 in the opening of their Easter weekend series. Latos didn’t figure into the decision but he provided five excellent innings, allowing one run on four hits and three walks with seven strikeouts along the way. Wil Browning got the win, throwing two perfect innings, striking out one while Chad Girodo got the save after two innings, walking one and giving up one hit with one strikeout.

The offense wasn’t particularly hot, getting just seven hits including two from Christian Lopes who scored a run and stole a base. Gregorio Petit returned to the lineup, going 1/4 while Jason Leblebijian was 1/3 with a double and a walk. Mike Ohlman was 1/4 with a double.

Player of the Game: Mat Latos

Roster Notes: Juan Graterol was designated for assignment and Chris Coghlan had his contract selected by the Blue Jays. Alex Monsalve returns from the DL to take Graterol’s place and Shane Opitz comes back from extended spring training to take Coghlan’s.

 

 

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 11, Hartford Yard Goats 7

 

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats’ offense exploded for 11 runs thanks to a couple of home runs and five Hartford errors in an 11-7 win. Reese McGuire and Jonathan Davis went back to back with home runs in the seventh inning to lead the offense with McGuire going 2/5 and Davis going 1/2 with two walks and two runs. Roemon Fields also had two doubles, driving in a pair, scoring twice and stealing his first base of the season. Joining the multi-hit club was Richard Urena who was 2/4 with a double.

Francisco Rios went 5 1/3 innings for the victory, giving up five runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Chris Rowley added 2 2/3 innings of two-run relief with Luis Santos throwing a perfect ninth, striking out two.

Dunedin Blue Jays 6, Jupiter Hammerheads 2

The Dunedin Blue Jays evened their record after a 6-2 win over the Jupiter Hammerheads on Friday. The Blue Jays got off to a fast start, scoring in the first two innings and then, it was runs in the last two innings that gave them their eventual margin of victory. Danny Jansen, once again, had a multi-hit game, rapping out three singles and catching a runner stealing. Andrew Guillotte had a big game with two doubles, a walk and two runs. Cavan Biggio was 2/5 with a double and two RBI while Juan Kelly and Matt Dean each had a single and a walk.

Angel Perdomo didn’t give up four home runs in this start but threw a lot of pitches, getting through just four innings with two runs against on six hits and two walks, striking out two. Connor Eller got the win, coming in from extended spring training and threw 2 1/3 innings with a hit and two walks while striking out four. Jared Carkuff, also returning from extended spring training, got the save with 2 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just a hit and a walk with two strikeouts.

Player of the Game: Danny Jansen, Cavan Biggio and Andrew Guilllotte

Roster Notes: Denis Diaz and Josh DeGraaf were assigned to extended spring training and Jared Carkuff and Connor Eller were both assigned to Dunedin.

 

Lansing Lugnuts 2, Lake County Captains 5

 

JB Woodman

The Lansing Lugnuts (6-3) attempted a comeback against the Lake County Captains in the bottom of the ninth but could only get one of the four runs they needed in a 5-2 loss. The Lugnuts got just seven hits over the course of their nine innings, getting a single and double from J.B. Woodman (who added a walk in the ninth), Bradley Jones and Ryan Hissey. Yeltsin Gudino had the club’s only other hit.

Mike Ellenbest got the start and allowed all five Lake County runs, giving up eight hits (including a home run) but also striking out five. Griffin Glaude (2 IP, 1 BB, 1 K) and Philip Walby (2 IP, 1 BB, 2 K) combined for four hitless innings to close out the game for the Lugnuts.
