2017 Toronto Blue Jays Review: Leonel Campos

 

An offseason waiver pickup, Leonel Campos was new to Toronto this year. After starting the season in Buffalo, he made his first appearance on April 22nd, and pitched a scoreless 1 2/3 innings in Anaheim. He was sent back to Buffalo on the 25th, and returned to the big club on May 11th. He pitched in three games in May, allowing two runs in four hits and two walks in 3 1/3 innings. However, in one of those games, he allowed a hit and a walk and was removed without getting an out. Neither runner scored. He was optioned back to Buffalo on May 16th.

Campos made two appearances in June, pitching 3 2/3 innings and allowing two runs – both unearned. He suffered a groin injury while running to cover first base on the 20th. As a result of the injury, he was placed on the disabled list, where he remained for over a month. His next appearance in the majors was on August 9th. Over four outings in August, a total of 3 innings, he allowed two earned runs.

 

 

Campos pitched in three games in September, and didn’t allow any runs.  His ERA for the year was 2.63, and his WHIP was 1.39. He tallied 15 strikeouts, and walked 8 batters. As a result, his K/BB rate was 1.88. Of the 13 games in which he appeared, he didn’t record a win or a loss in any of them.

 

Contract Status:

Campos became a free agent when the Blue Jays outrighted him off the roster at the end of the season. On November 22nd he signed with Cleveland.
